Oscars - in depth (kinda)

Best picture: Chicago
Best director: Roman Polanski, The Pianist
Best actor: Adrien Brody, The Pianist
Best actress: Nicole Kidman, The Hours
Supporting actor: Chris Cooper, Adaptation
Supporting actress: Catherine Zeta-Jones, Chicago

[DELETED PICTURE]

There were no big surprises, except for Eminem. I never thought a rap song would be nominated, let alone win the award. Don't get me wrong, I do like Eminem, but let's face it, this is not one of his best songs. Anyway, I'm glad U2 didn't win. It's a pet peeve of mine.

Adrien Brody wasn't a surprise. He was in my potential spoiler list from the beginning. And Polanski was no surprise either. He was actually my first choice, but then I read about how hated he was in America (cannot travel to the United States because of an outstanding arrest warrant on a charge of statutory rape) and I changed my mind. So much for influence. However, when I heard his name I thought, "No! No! No! This is going to be a disappointment!" because I thought, "Best Actor + Best Screenplay + Best Director = Best Picture". It did make sense and at that point, in my mind, it didn't seem logical to give the award to any other movie. But the Academy is almost never logical, and this year I'm glad for that. I really wanted Chicago to win and... it did!

Sean Connery presenting the award for Supporting Actress was just so obvious. I should have known the minute I saw him. I was just so thrilled Catherine won the Oscar. She and Latifah were great in their rendition of "I Move On", by the way.

[DELETED PICTURE]
"Oh my God - it's a Scotsman giving a Welsh girl an Oscar" - Catherine Zeta-Jones

Nicole seemed to be hypnotized or something. When Denzel announced, "By a nose..." she didn't even move. She only reacted when she heard her name. She was robbed last year, if I do say so myself. She really deserved this. I'm glad she finally got it. "Why do you come to the Academy Awards when the world is in turmoil? Because art is important", she said.

Kirk and Michael Douglas (father and son) were also great, presenting Best Picture.
Michael: You're supposed to say, "and the Oscar goes to..."
Kirk: And the winner is...!

Gangs

I finally saw Gangs Of New York. Bah. So much fuzz for that? I realize I'm fighting the tide here. Truth be told, epics are not my thing. War and blood shed, also not my thing. Unless, of course, the whole blood thing is caused by a vampire, but that's a different story and a different genre. Back to the gangs. Keyword: revenge. It doesn't really go beyond that. The plot is everything but original and the score is nothing short of typical. Still, and even though I never really liked Daniel Day-Lewis, I must admit he's quite good as William Cutting. However, not half as good as Nicholson's Schmidt.

Chicago » My (biased) review

Murderesses Velma Kelly (who blanked out and killed her cheating husband) and Roxie Hart (who killed her boyfriend in a jealous rage) strive for fame at any costs including scandal and lies in 1920s Chicago.

Because not everything can be bad, I finally managed to see Chicago. No need to say I loved it. It deserves all the 13 nominations it got, and then some. Seeing it only reinforced my initial idea that Catherine Zeta-Jones is the star of the movie, although her character is only supporting. Nevertheless, she shines as Velma Kelly. She's absolutely great in the "I Can't Do It Alone" sequence, as well as in the opening scene, with "All That Jazz" and, of course, in "Cell Block Tango". Well, she's great throughout the whole movie. It's a shame that she has such a limited screen time, but she definitely deserves an Oscar for this.

Okay, it wasn't that bad, after all. Nicole Kidman and Jack Nicholson won, as well as Chicago and The Hours! That's what I wanted. The only thing I didn't like was Zellweger winning instead of Zeta-Jones. Oh well, you can't have it all...

grrr!

Quid juris at the movies

I hate Law as much as the Law students hate the Economics class they have. Nevertheless, I've been studying Law, without complaining (a lot). I've been neglecting Calculus in the last couple of days, because I really want to pass Law. It's theory and theory is what I'm good at, so failing this class, again if I may say so, would be rather dramatic. But this is not what I want to write about. I want to talk about the Golden Globes, which will take place tomorrow. Being the movie freak I am, I always watch these things. So here it goes:

Best Picture (Comedy/Musical)
Being a fan of musicals, it's quite obvious that I want(!) Chicago to win. And I really think it will.

Best Actress (Comedy/Musical)
If last year I wanted N. Kidman to win, this year I have my fingers crossed for Catherine Zeta-Jones. Not that I don't like Renée Zellweger, but Zeta-Jones is one of my favorite actresses and it's overdue since Traffic. And besides, she sings much better than Zellweger, don't you think? Forgetting what I want, I actually think that Zellweger will win this one, much to my dismay.

Best Picture (Drama)
I'm divided between The Hours and Gangs Of The New York. I think that LOTR doesn't stand a chance, not yet anyway. Personally, I'd choose The Hours. It's rather obvious why, isn't it?

Best Actor (Drama)
My choice goes to Jack Nicholson, he's one of my favorite actors and I think he deserves it.

Best Actress (Drama)
Nicole Kidman is my favorite actress, so it's obvious that I'd like her to win, but I'm quite sure she won't. It will either be Julianne Moore or Meryl Streep.

And the rest doesn't really matter...

If you can't be famous, be infamous!

No, I'm no one's wife
But oh, I love my life
And all that
JAZZ!

shame!

LOTR

I finally saw Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring! Ridiculous, huh? After all this time... only now. It's curious, though. I've waited anxiously for it and I actually intended to see it when it first came out, but then some things happened and I couldn't. It's funny to observe the strange ways of life, its twists and turns. In this case, it was just a movie; sometimes it's more important things. But back to the movie, there's no possible review. There's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said. It's a great movie and whoever says otherwise must be nuts. I particularly liked Gandalf and Aragorn (characters), as well as Gandalf's fight with the Balrog, Boromir's last fight and when Sam almost drowned trying to follow Frodo (scenes). And… the Ringwraiths reminded me of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Crazy.

Moulin Rouge!

I finally saw "Moulin Rouge". Loved it, loved it, loved it! *sigh* It's a must see for Nicole and music fans. The story itself isn't that original, but love stories never are. Toulouse-Lautrec's character is just great! He's one of my favorite painters, by the way. And Ewan's voice really impressed me. The movie probably has excessive color usage, but after all, it is the Moulin Rouge, where eccentricity rules. The imagery is awesome. It's very well done, indeed. I'd give it some Oscars if I were the Academy. Really, at least three - for the costumes, for the visual effects and for the soundtrack. And I think that Nicole should be nominated for best actress.

Les Rivières Pourpres

I went to see "Les Rivières Pourpres" with two friends. For a French movie, it was pretty good. Kind of typical though. It's not the first time that an "unknown" twin is the guilty evil criminal. Right now I can think of "Snapdragon", but there are more. I actually thought the nun was guilty. She was blind and all the victims' eyes were removed. See the connection? The bad twin mentions the mother in the end, which leads me to think she was behind the whole thing, after all. But maybe I wasn't paying enough attention and I'm wrong. French accents get on my nerves.

My friend asked me, "What's so funny about horror movies?". And I couldn't answer him. Trying to figure who the killer is. Getting scared knowing it's not for real. I don't know exactly. I just know I like horror movies better than war movies or comedies such as "American Pie" or "Scary Movie". I hate epics. I hate space/aliens movies. I hate movies with dinosaurs. What I really like is action, thriller, suspense, drama, horror, musicals and original comedies. Anything with a good sword/martial arts fight, witches or vampires makes my day.
